The Road Through the Water: The Practice That Makes It Visible

The practice card is still blank. Last month the class wrote God will make a way in the margin of the packet. This month the same class can quote the east wind and the wall of water. The woman in the second row has a Tuesday she can already name: the first conversation with the person she has been postponing because the sea story felt safer than the walk. The man by the aisle has a step he already knows: tell the truth about the fear before he asks the church to keep printing the crossing. A teacher at the table has both names on a list. He has a sentence about dry ground. He has not asked who still treats the next named step as optional homework.

This is a sermon for a church that already owns the road through the water and still treats the practice that would make it visible as extra credit. If you preach Exodus 14 as a map of anyone's private panic, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel between Pharaoh and the sea, you give this church a God who makes a way where fear can see only a dead end, and you take away the cheap discipleship that hides behind a finished crossing sentence.
